ecophonik is the music of Alan Halstead and friends. Based in southern New Zealand, their music captures the essence of the landscape that surrounds them.Alan records environmental sounds like native bird songs, rivers, the rain on a tin roof, and incorporates them into his live sets. The music is best described as a unique blend of dub, breakbeat, house and trance. The melodic ambient origins of the music are balanced by the deep rolling dub basslines and the hypnotic beats and that shift easily from 4/4 dub to breakbeat like the flow of a mountain stream - sometimes smooth,sometimes irregular and exciteable. When combined with the soaring vocals of Kerensa Stephens and Hannah Howes, a beautiful synergy of organic and digital sound is created. The listener is entranced as the vocals shift through the layers of dub like patupaiarehe in the undergrowth... ecophonik has performed at outdoor festivals such as: Kaikoura Roots (05,06) Destinations(04) Visionz(04) and Eudeamony(04,05,06). They have played support for Salmonella Dub and Cornerstone Roots. Recently they played at Uprising,Parihaka Peace Festival, and Soundsplash in Raglan.
